Central
Pension Accounting Office
The
Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) was set up as an
administrative unit of the Ministry of Finance, Department of
Expenditure under the Controller General of Accounts. The office
started functioning with effect from
1st January 1990
. This office is administering the ‘Scheme for Payment of Pension
to Central Government Civil Pensioners by Authorised Banks’. Its
functions inter-alia includes:
The
scheme referred to above extends to all pensioners of the Central
Government employed in Civil Ministries (other than Railways,
Defence and P&T). It also covers retired Judges of the High
Courts and the Supreme Court, All India Service officers of UT Cadre
& former Members of Parliament. Along with these, the payment of
pension and other amenities to former Presidents and Vice-Presidents
of India is also covered
by the Scheme.
Since,
its inception in 1990, the Central Pension Accounting Office has
handled around 4,08,365 fresh pension cases and 4,05,708 cases of
revision, commutation etc. and thus has dealt with around 8,14,073
cases in total upto
31st March 2004
. In the year 2003-04, the office has dealt with around 36,275 fresh
cases and 13,387 cases of revision, commutation and transfer
totaling to 49,662 cases.
Central
Pension Accounting Office has its own website www.cpao.nic.in
which gives the procedure for pension payment of Central Civil
Pensioners. It provides linkages to other related sites to provide
access to latest Government orders on pension matter. The site has
got a facility for online inquiry of the status of Pension cases
being processed in the CPAO. Pensioners can also correspond with
this office through this website.
An
interactive voice response system (IVRS) with numbers 011-26715108,
011-26715109, 011-26715110, 011-26715112 has been installed to
provide round the clock information on status of pension cases being
processed in the CPAO.
CPAO
is presently functioning as interim Central Record Keeping Agency
for the New Pension Scheme applicable from
01-01-2004
for all new entrants to
the Central Government excluding armed forces.
